It was made and appeared on the market about 1887. It is a single layered glass, obviously opaque with the same color intensity on the inside as on the outside. Prior to the last firing a blue mottled stain was applied to the upper part of the piece, and subsequently was decorated with a narrow gold border along the lower part of the mottling. Continuous handling, or washing with soap and water, will cause the blue mottling and gold band to be worn off as the stain has only slight penetration. Most examples are a satin finish, as are the examples in this appraisal, but there are glossy finished pieces.(slightly higher value or priority) This glass type not only has a ground or finished pontil but the rims of the pieces were ground. Color intensity is stable, but glass can be considered brittle and can be easily chipped. It is considered rare and highly collectible. Production reported to have been for only one year. Values depend on condition, the amount of mottled stain and gold border remaining, finish, and the individual piece as to use being appraised.
